Open Year Round : Cooke City via Yellowstone National Park North Entrance at Gardiner, Mammoth directly to the Northeast Entrance into the Cooke City Area.

2009 Yellowstone National Park Roads will open to motorized, wheeled vehicles as follows:

April 17Yellowstone: West side roads open to motor vehicles. Mammoth to Norris Junction to Madison Junction to Old Faithful; Madison Junction to West Entrance; Norris Junction to Canyon.

May 1Yellowstone: Canyon to Lake; Lake to East Entrance.

May 8Yellowstone: Tower to Tower Fall; Lake to West Thumb; West Thumb to Old Faithful; South to Old Faithful.ĘCooke City via Colter Pass to the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway intersection to the Long Lake gate shall be open as soon thereafter as possible.

May 22 (if snow and plow conditions allow)Yellowstone: Tower Falls to Canyon via Dunraven Pass; Long Lake Gate to Red Lodge via Beartooth Pass.


2009 Seasonal Road Opening and Closure Information

The Beartooth Highway (Highway 212), between the junction of Highway 296 and Red Lodge, MT heading East to Red Lodge will close this year on October 13, 2009.  This road will remain closed until Memorial Day Weekend.

The Chief Joseph-Hwy 296 remains open all year around and is maintained daily. 

From the Junction of Hwy 296/212 the road is open for 4 miles towards Cooke City and is plowed to Pilot Creek Parking Lot. From Pilot Creek the road is over snow travel only (non-wheeled vehicles) to Cooke City for approx. 10 miles.  This portion of the road is plowed open the first week of May. It is always best to check with the Cooke City area Chamber for road & travel information during the first two weeks of May for openings.   Inclement weather causes occasional closures even after initial openings.  Please call 406-838-2495 or check back here for up to date information.

Road from Pilot Creek to Cooke City is closed.  (11/16/09 updated)

Cooke City via Colter Pass to the Long Lake gate is not maintained for wheeled vehicle travel beginning November 2, 2009. Travel at your own risk.

Yellowstone Park - November 2, 2009—all park roads closed to the public at 8 a.m. except from the North Entrance to Upper Mammoth Terrace, and Mammoth via Tower Junction to Northeast Entrance.
